EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS

EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY*

Fall 12 - Week Session for Ages 4-6

Winter/ Spring Session 18 weeks (36 classes)

Children will learn literacy skills through poems, songs and reinforcement activities. This course is designed to get readers and non-readers engaged in reading and writing. Children who are re-registering will continue to gain valuable skills in rhyme, vocabulary and expanded reading and writing ability.

The curriculum was created at the prestigious Bank Street College of  Education in New York. It is taught by certified Rhode Island teachers with Masters degrees in Early Childhood and Literacy.

Choose M/W or T/TH &  Choose 9 - 11 AM  or  1- 3 PM     

Winter/Spring 2012: Mondays & Wednesdays: January 9 - May 30 (no class 1/16, 2/20, 2/22, 4/16, 4/18, 5/28)

Winter/Spring 2012: Tuesdays & Thursdays:  January 10 - May 24 (no class 2/21, 2/24, 4/17, 4/19)

NUMBER SENSE*

Winter/ Spring Session - 18 weeks (18 classes) beginning Friday January 13th. Per Pupil Cost: $180 Cumberland Residents. Registrations will be due in December in order to start classes on time.)

Children will learn math concepts through songs, hands-on activities, and everyday math related experiences.  This program will focus on the concept of “number” (counting, determining relative quantities, less and more), and basic operations such as adding and  subtracting.

WINTER/SPRING: January 13 - June 1 (no class 2/24, 4/6, 4/20)

SPANISH FOR FUN!

Learn Spanish together! Join us for a 45 minute class where you and your child will learn words and songs in Spanish. Parent/guardian will join the children in this special class in which the whole family can participate. Lessons are geared for children ages 3-5, but other young children are welcome. Students who participated in the Fall are encouraged to continue. There will be some repetition of basics, but your child will continue to learn new vocabulary and confidence in speaking Spanish with new students who join. Some materials will be provided to take home between classes.

Per pupil cost: $60 for 1st child in the family, $15 each additional child ages 2-6 in the same family.

MUSIC AND MOVEMENT 

"Music Aptitude is a product of both Nature and Nurture. The potential that a student is born with and the quality of the musical environment to which he is exposed affect each other until he reaches approximately age nine. " ~Edwin Gordon

Accompanied by a parent/guardian the children will explore musical development. Activities from the child's world will combine vocal play, sounds, rhythm, language and genuine silly fun while learning tonality. Instructor Mike Boday has training in early childhood music programming and is a long time teacher in Rhode Island Public Schools. Parent Educational Tips and Curriculum Concepts will be shared with the participating adult.

Wednesdays, September 28- December 14th

WINTER/SPRING SESSION: January 11 - April 4 (No class 2/22)

The 2nd half of the curriculum will begin in late January. Students do not have to attend Fall to attend the Winter Session. Students who are 2 years old and were in the Fall Session should consult with Mr. Boday about which class to sign up for. Register early- these classes always fill up!

SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS:

CHESS 

10 -Week Sessions for ages 8-14

WINTER Session: Tuesdays-  January 10- March 20, 2012 (no class 2/21)
REGISTRATIONS DUE before student may attend class.

Learn chess and improve your chess strategy with guidance from Bob Salvas, a lifetime member of the United States Chess Federation and a chess instructor for more than 10 years. Students who have not yet participated in the OCYL program must attend the beginner session and will move to the next levels based on teacher assessment. Each class is one hour long and meets at OCYL.

Beginners: 5:30 PM

The beginner program is designed to teach the rules and strategies of the game to those who either do not know how to play or for those who have a basic knowledge of chess.

Intermediate: 5:30 PM

The Intermediate program is for students who have graduated from the OCYL Beginner Program. It is designed to teach tactics and strategies to those who have a thorough knowledge of official rules.

Advanced: 6:30 PM

The advanced program is for students who have graduated from the OCYL Intermediate Program.  It is designed to introduce students to competitive chess and some of the more advanced strategies of the game.  Emphasis is on learning how to play in a sanctioned tournament and in leagues, clubs, and how to join the United States Chess Federation.

MCCOURT MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:  SIGN UP FOR AN AFTERSCHOOL CHESS CLASS IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE For Tues. and/or Thurs. at McCourt.

CERAMICS 

Sessions for Grades K-5

WINTER Session: 6 Fridays, January 13- February 17                             

SPRING Session: TBA

Learn wet clay techniques with a local ceramicist. Pieces will be kiln fired and at least one will be finished with kiln fired glazes. A description of projects will be available closer to the beginning of the session. This class will offer new projects and techniques in addition to some already learned in this fun hands-on class!

Grades K-2:   3:45 - 4:45 PM This class has already begun- no late registrations.

Grades 3-5:   5:00- 6:00 PM  Sorry, this class has been canceled. If you are interested in a Spring session, please contact us.

CHORUS

Sessions for Grades 1-5 

Learn a wide variety of songs and voice techniques! Fall session will be with Janita Ducharme, and Lauren Dwyer will be returning for the Winter/Spring Session.

GEOCACHING

Grades 4-8. This will be offered late Spring through Fall 2012

Join TEAM OCYL! Players use a GPS receiver (provided in class) in a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game to seek containers hidden in "caches" on the Monastery Grounds. Share experiences online!

JEWELRY DESIGN

8 Week Session for Grades 3 - 12
Winter: February 1- March 28 (no class 2/22)
Wednesdays
Learn about the history of beads in cultures and societies around the world while you make and design your own beads! Design beads out of paper, polymer, wood and more to combine with glass and metal beads. Learn techniques to incorporate findings (like necklace clasps and crimps)  into your projects.  Each student will have the opportunity to complete several jewelry projects. Students who have jewelry tools will be encouraged to bring them to each class.

MATH MATTERS!

4 Week Sessions for Grades 1-6

Session 1: Jan. 28- Mar. 3 ( no class 2/18 & 25) REGISTRATIONS DUE: 1/13/12

The instructor will teach hands-on math activities and games to enhance the school year curriculum.   Details on weekly topics to be covered will be available. Students needing help with current class assignments are encouraged to attend. Class size is small, allowing for more individualized attention.

ROBOTICS

4-Week Session for Grades 4-8

WINTER: January 28, Feb 4. Feb 11 and March 3rd (possible class on Feb 18 if ALL students are available. This would cancel the 3/3 date).

Discover science and technology through   basic engineering concepts, teamwork, creative thinking, and sportsmanship.

The hands-on class is based on Lego Mindstorms® programs.

Robotics 101 (12:30 - 2:30 PM) is for those without previous experience building and programming robots.

Robotics in Action (2:45 - 4:45 PM) is for those who have previously taken Robotics 101/equivalent and would like new challenges.

VISUAL ART

Professional Artist Donna MacLure will be teaching the Winter session of this class. Students will create art projects using different techniques, processes and materials.

High School students are welcome in some of the general classes (jewelry, visual art, watercolor) so check the list above. We are also working on more opportunities for just High School students. Check back for more and let us know what kind of classes you'd like to take!


A Cappella

We're interviewing instructors for A Cappella groups- send us your email address if you are interested. We're considering classes on Sundays. Some students will audition for performances and a group will be formed "just for fun" too!

E-Portfolio Assistance

Do you need help with your school portfolio? Youth Commissioners will be volunteering to assist you! Send us your email address and we'll set you up for a session.

Financial Literacy We're working on dates and times for this unique program that will help any teen prepare for managing and understanding finances from debit cards to how to manage credit. Send us your email address and what evening/weekend days you are available for a class while we coordinate with the instructor.

SAT TEST DATES

Upcoming test dates: June 4th at Woonsocket High.

The SAT will be offered at Cumberland High School on the following dates:  November 5, 2011, March 10, 2012 and May 5, 2012. OCYL offers SAT Prep in the Summer/Fall and Winter/Spring to prepare for the most popular test dates at Cumberland High School.

SAT PREP

Winter Session will be offered to prepare for the May 5, 2012 test. Class will begin January 7th. This class has filled.

Calling all Juniors and Seniors!!!

Classes taught by doctoral students from Brown University who are trained SAT  tutors. Classes will review verbal, math and writing skills. Practice tests will be administered and analyzed in class. Review Math, Verbal & Writing.

11 Saturdays

All students will take the pretest on January 7th, 2012th from 8am-12 noon at OCYL.

All other weeks :   9 AM - 11 AM

Per pupil Cost (includes College Board’s Official SAT Study Guide):  $145
Classes will be January 7, 14, 21(snow day will be made up 4/14), 1/28, 2/ 4, 2/11 (no class 2/18 or 25), March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 (make up date in case of inclement weather: April 28)

 

CUMBERLAND YOUTH COMMISSION, a Youth Program of the OCYL

A Unique Opportunity for Grades 9-12 and Middle School!

Be engaged. Be heard. Improve your town by being part of a growing youth voice for the community. This is your  opportunity to actively participate in town government and provide town services. A unique program for High School and Middle School students who reside in the Town of Cumberland, Rhode Island.

To be a Commissioner, high school students must complete the competitive application process, attend a the Summer Leadership Academy, attend weekly Monday evening meetings (6:30- 7:45 PM)  and maintain expectations during the school year.  Please see the Youth Commission page for details.

To be a Junior Commissioner, middle school students must complete the competitive application process, attend a portion of the Summer Leadership Academy, attend specified Monday evening meetings and maintain expectations during the school year.

To volunteer with the Commissioners, students must complete a volunteer application form available from OCYL to assist with Youth Commission activities. All students are welcome to attend the Monday evening meetings.

Additional volunteer opportunities are available for adults and teens now to assist  OCYL with teachers, office administration, website and more.

SUMMER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

A free program for  High & Middle School students interested in applying to the Cumberland Youth Commission.  Learn leadership, advocacy and professionalism skills. Program is held annually in August.  SLA Director, Matt Diamond will review CYC applications in May and June each year to accept students into the Summer Program. Those who complete the SLA will be officially invited to join the Commission in the Fall.
